TNO (1932) is an independent, not-for-profit research organization founded by law in 1932 to boost the competitiveness of companies and organisations, stimulate the economy and advance the quality of society. Energy is one of seven focus areas in TNO with 500+ researchers active in national and international research & development projects regarding exploration, production and transport oil and natural gas, carbon capture & storage, sustainable energy, smart energy systems and energy efficiency. TNO Energy also comprises the Geological Survey of the Netherlands.

Role in the project TNO will lead WP6: ― Definition of business models for an emerging social energy value system. Furthermore, TNO will significantly contribute to WP5: ―Community participation as here the developed business models will have to be introduced to participating users. TNO‘s contribution is also crucial in WP3: - enabling smart social participation in order to give input to the development of socio technical systems that are developed.
